Performs microscopic analysis for cytogenetic studies on biological specimens from cell cultures. Studies include hematological disorders, fertility problems, chromosome analyses for prenatal diagnosis, and congenital birth defects. Responsibilities include slide preparation, photomicroscopy, microscopy, computer image analysis, karyotyping, culturing and harvesting procedures, and result reporting. Requires a bachelor's degree and a certificate in cytogenetics or clinical genetics. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.
