Examines, diagnoses, and surgically treats disorders of the brain, spine, spinal cord, and nerves. Operates on the brain in order to relieve pressure in an intracranial hemorrhage, remove a foreign body such as a tumor, treat a wound, or relieve pain. Operates on the spine in order to free entrapped nerves, correct deformity, or restore spinal stability. Requires a degree in medicine from an accredited school and is licensed to practice. May require at least 4-6 years of surgery experience. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. May report to the chief of surgery.
