Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) supervises, maintains, and enhances policies and procedures for a medical library. Oversees professional and support staff involved in cataloging, indexing, issuing books/materials, and keeping records of items on loan. Being a Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) selects books and publications for purchase and subscribes to pertinent periodicals as allowed for by the given budget. Responds to more complex requests from faculty, medical staff, students etc. Requires master's of library and information science from an ALA-accredited school. Additionally, Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) typically reports to a director. The Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.
